For vehicles manufactured before 1981, the unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) code given to each vehicle is created from using a 13-digit sequence of letters and numbers. Each character in the sequence provides certain information about the vehicle, such as manufacturer, place of origin, place of assembly, model year, and vehicle type. To decode the 13-digit VIN number, you must understand what each character in the sequence means.
Step 1
Examine the first digit of the VIN number to find the manufacturer country of origin. Vehicles manufactuered in the United States will have a 1, 4 or 5 as the first digit in the VIN number code, Canada is 2, Mexico is 3, Japan is 'J,' Korea is 'K,' England is 'S,' Germany is 'W,' Italy is 'Z,' Sweden is 'Y,' Australia is 6, France is 'V' and Brazil is represented by the number 9.
Step 2
Find the second digit in the VIN number sequence to determine the manufacturer of the vehicle. For example, Jaguar is represented by the letter 'A,' Dodge with the letter 'B,' Chrysler with the letter 'C,' Jeep with the letter 'J' and so forth.
Step 3
Read the third character in the VIN number sequence to find out the vehicle type. For example, a passenger sedan would have a number of '3' while a pick-up truck would be represented by the number '7.'
Step 4
Examine the fourth to eighth characters to find out the identification of the engine type, brake system model, restraint system and body style. The ninth character of the VIN number series is known as the VIN number 'check digit' verification, which checks the previous VIN numbers for accuracy. According to the Auto Insurance Tips website, the verification process is carried out by a mathematical computation developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Step 5
Read the tenth character of the VIN number sequence to determine the model year of the vehicle. If the vehicle was manufactured between 2001 and 2009, the digits will appear as 0-9. For example, if the tenth character is represented by the number '9,' then the vehicle was manufactured in 2009. Beginning in 2010, manufacturers will begin using letters instead of numbers. So 2010 model year vehicles would have a character of 'A,' 2011 model year vehicles would have characters of 'B' and so forth.
Step 6
Find and examine the eleventh character of the VIN number sequence to determine the manufactured plant of your vehicle. Unlike the manufacturer's country of origin, this number represents where the vehicle was assembled.
The last two digits, the twelfth and thirteenth characters, represents the unique 'serial' number of each vehicle. Although the two characters do not provide much information about the vehicle, it separates the other vehicles of the same kind that rolls off the assembly lines.

Avoid buying a car with costly hidden problems.
Since 1954, all vehicles made in the United States are assigned a vehicle identification number (VIN). In the first few decades of VIN assignment, the numbers themselves varied depending on the vehicle's manufacturer—there was no standard regarding length, character type, etc.
Beginning with the production of vehicles model year 1981 and newer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized the assignment of VINs to be a combination of 17 characters (numbers and letters).
Importance of VINs for Older Vehicles
Whether it's for pure nostalgia or business purposes, there are many reasons you may need tolocate the VIN of an older vehicle. Some of the more common include:
- Searching for an old car or truck you used to own.
- Checking the authenticity of an older vehicle before you decide to purchase it.
- Getting the exact history for an old car you already own.
- Obtaining production numbers for rare or special edition vehicles.
- Determining an accurate value for a vehicle before you decide to sell.
Like any used car, it's important to know as much about a vehicle's history as possible. Because older cars and trucks typically have a larger monetary value, the risk is often greater—especially if you don't have any way of knowing basic information of a car or truck's history.
Find a VIN for an Older Vehicle
Your first step to locating an older vehicle or obtaining more information about a particular vehicle's history is to obtain an accurate VIN or serial number. If the VIN plates and stickers are missing, or if you don't know the VIN of an old car or truck you used to own, there are several ways you can locate a particular vehicle's VIN, such as:
- Old registration and insurance cards.
- Any loan papers you may have signed.
- The bank from which the loan was obtained may also have this information on file.
- Records from insurance companies.
- Either your insurance company or a previous owner's.
- Repair records from a car dealership.
- Repair receipts are also a possibility.
- Police reportsor insurance claims.
- VIN information might be available if the vehicle was ever involved in an accident.
Using Photos to Find VIN Information
If you aren't able to locate a vehicle's VIN through these methods, you might want to try searching through old photographs. While some of this information may not directly lead to a VIN number, it can provide valuable information on the history of a vehicle.
It's a good idea to search old photographs for:
- License plate numbers.
- If you own the vehicle, the state DMV where the car or truck is registered may be able to help you locate the VIN in some cases.
- Information relating to original body, engine, and transmission type.
- The original color of vehicle.
- Information relating to the interior design of the vehicle.
Begin a VIN Search for Older Vehicles
Locating an old car or truck you used to own can be a challenge with or without an accurate VIN.
If you have a VIN or serial number, start your search by:
- Using a VIN check site that specializes in older vehicle databases.
- Typing your VIN into a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing.
If you don't have a VIN or serial number, try posting a search history on the vehicle. A search history is an ad that typically features a short description or story related to the vehicle you're searching for. Post a search history you create to:
- Enthusiast message boards.
- National car club websites.
- Use any car club that features your model of vehicle.
- Facebook or other social media outlets.
- Want ads in car club newsletters.
- A blog you create.
In addition to posting a search history, locating previous owners of the vehicle can provide valuable information that can help you find your car. If you have the address or name of the person your car was sold to, get in contact by searching:
- Social media.
- Public record databases.
- Gathering information through search engines.
This can often lead to more detailed information on license plates, VIN numbers, and additional owners of the vehicle that may help you to continue your search.

This means you cannot replace a VIN plate yourself, even when swapping dashboards or such; you need to have this done by a licensed mechanic working with a dealer, and filing all necessary paperwork. This also applies to any material changes to the overall VIN plate including paintwork.

From 1926 to 1930, Chrysler used the FEDCO system, which had numbers and letters. The letters were actually numbers, decoded according to the following guide, which honored leader W.P. Chrysled. Once translated to serial numbers, one must still know what runs belonged to each car.
Vin Year Digit Chart
From 1931 to 1954, Chrysler used mostly all-numeric codes (with some exceptions) that were sequential for given models. Some of these are described in Gerard Wilson's articles (e.g. 1946-48). In 1955, Chrysler started putting more information into their VINs, with 1 being the make (e.g. C = Chrysler), 2 and 3 being the year (e.g. 55 for 1955), and the remainder being a sequential build number. In 1958, Chrysler switched the year to the first letter (it was L), and the second two places were for the car model.
Randy Knox wrote:
I have a 1954 letter from Edgar Kaiser to Kaiser-Willys dealers and distributors, saying that the U.S. Government had requested that the Automobile Manufacturers Association and the auto manufacturers get together and resolve the vehicle ID system problem. .. With the incompatible registration systems, cars were difficult to track between states, as were stolen cars. The letter detailed an agreement to be implemented by all U.S. manufacturers in 1955, including a manufacturer-specific standardized numbering system within the guidelines (to be called the 'Vehicle Identification Number') and, to aid the police on stolen vehicles, stamping that VIN in several places on the frame, shown in Edgar’s letter. This new-for-1955 VIN is still evolving!
1959-65
The modern age for Chrysler VINs began in 1959. The first digit was the model year - M for 1959; the second was the brand; the third was the series; and the fourth was the assembly plant, finally making its way into the VIN. The next five digits were the build number, again sequential, so that car 100001 was the first car made. (It would take decades for the company to stop using sequential numbers).
VINs were stamped onto a metal plate which is attached either just under the windshield on the driver’s side (so it’s visible through the windshield), or on the driver’s door body hinge post.

To protect the consumer from theft and possible fraud the manufacturer is required to include a 'check digit' at the ninth position of the VIN. The check digit is used by the manufacturer and government agencies to verify the authenticity of the vehicle and official documentation. The formula to use the check digit is not released to the general public.

NHTSA required vehicles made after April 29, 2009, to use slightly different VINs. The manufacturer space moved; and the year required two spots (in vehicles with a gross weight rating below 10,001 lb). If position 7 is numeric, the model year (in position 10) is a year in 1980-2009; in position 7 is a letter, then position 10 is a year from 2010-2039. For higher-capacity vehicles, along with motorcycles, trailers, and low-speed vehicles, the year code is simply repeated in position 10. Plant and engine codes appear to continue.

Because of this, the world was rapidly running out of available combinations for the first three characters. To fix the problem, the additional detail is now being included in VIN positions 5-7, which are controlled internally by each manufacturer.

Vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, are individualized serial codes assigned to vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and trucks. As the name implies, these numbers are used for identification purposes and can reveal certain information about a particular vehicle, much like the DNA of an organism. Standard VIN numbers in the United States are 17-digit codes that carry significant information about a vehicle such as manufacturer and factory information. Some foreign makes, such as Mercedes, utilize a 14-digit VIN, which may confuse users looking to decode an unconventional VIN.
Decoding a VIN Manually
Step 1
Locate the VIN number on your vehicle. Common locations for a VIN number include the dashboard, steering column and the driver-side door. If you have the registration and paperwork for the vehicle, the VIN number will be noted.
Step 2
Check the first three digits of your VIN number. These digits refer to the chassis number of your vehicle. This information describes aspects such as spring-loaded hoods, sunroofs and other features based upon your vehicle manufacturer.
Step 3
Check the next digit in the VIN number. This fourth digit represents the engine gas type. The number will either be a '0' for regular gas or '1' for diesel fuel.
Step 4
Check the fifth and six digits in the VIN number. These digits refer to the particular model of the car. Each manufacturer using a 14-digit VIN number will have particular designations for these digits, which refer to a specific vehicle model.
Step 5
Check the seventh digit of the VIN number. This refers to the driver side of the vehicle. If the vehicle's driver seat is on the left side of the vehicle, the digit will be a '1.' Right-side driver vehicles are denoted by a '2.'
Step 6
Check the eighth digit in the VIN number. This digit will denote the type of transmission used in the vehicle. Automatic transmissions are denoted by a '2,' while manual transmissions are '0.'
Check the last six digits of the VIN number. These digits represent the individual vehicle's ID number that sets it apart from all other vehicles of the same model that have been produced in the same manufacturing plant. The earliest produced vehicle of a particular model is denoted as '000001,' while later vehicles of the same make and model increase sequentially.
